Canimaging is a series of twelve inch square canvases where I have responded to historical and current photos when reading up on an idea online or just browsing the newspaper. Over a couple of years I created over thirty panels. Later as my work moved on I would edit these canvases; some were discarded, others reworked and retitled. The backgrounds here have a lot to do with earlier work where I used texture, layering, paper cuts, collage, repetitive patterns, pastels and paint to invoke the physical character of the Boreal Region of Ontario rather than represent it realistically. The painted “realistic” images suggest to me hints of the stories that have and continue to inhabit this region, some only in imagination. The numerical titles are just identifiers that are approximately chronological.
